Editorial Standards

How we write about finance

Finance is “Your Money or Your Life” (YMYL) content under Google's quality guidelines. That means higher standards. This page documents how we research, write, review, and update the content on Eagle Rock CFO.

1. Original research and primary sources

Every benchmark, statistic, and claim on this site cites its source. We distinguish between three tiers:

  • Proprietary data from our client base (anonymized and aggregated). Where we cite our own data, the methodology and time window are documented in the article.
  • Third-party primary sources — SEC filings, BEA data, industry association reports, peer-reviewed journals. Linked inline.
  • Secondary sources (analyst reports, mainstream press) used for context, never as the sole basis for a claim.

When we report industry benchmarks, we say where the data came from and when it was collected. We do not extrapolate from a single source to make it sound like consensus.

2. Authorship and credentials

Articles are written and reviewed by named team members with relevant credentials. Our content is authored by:

  • Nick Jain — Co-Founder. Former CFO/CEO at companies up to $100M revenue. Bain Capital private equity, Greenlight Capital public equities. MBA, Harvard Business School (Baker Scholar).
  • Dan Settel — Co-Founder. Co-founder of Zanbato (VC secondaries platform, >$1B/year in transactions). Former VC and mutual fund investor.

We do not publish unattributed content. If a guest contributor writes an article, they are named and their relevant background is listed at the top of the page.

3. Review process

Before publication, every article goes through the following review:

  1. Draft — written by an author with relevant subject-matter expertise.
  2. Editorial review — second team member reads for accuracy, claims sourcing, and clarity.
  3. Compliance check — for content that touches tax, securities, or regulated accounting topics, a CPA or licensed professional reviews the technical claims.
  4. Final pass — copyedit, link check, structured data verification.

For evergreen content (benchmarks, frameworks, guides), we re-review annually. For content that depends on a specific tax year, statute, or market regime, the article shows the “last reviewed” date at the top.

4. Update cadence

Stale financial content is a liability. We follow these rules:

  • Benchmark articles (e.g., gross margin benchmarks, EBITDA multiples) are updated at least annually with the most recent data available. The “last updated” date is shown on the article.
  • Regulatory or tax content is updated when the underlying rule changes. A change is documented in the article's revision history.
  • Framework and conceptual content is reviewed at least every 18 months for accuracy and relevance.

5. What we don't do

  • No AI-generated bulk content. Every article is written by a named human author. We do not publish programmatic pages generated from a template.
  • No undisclosed conflicts. If we recommend a product or service in a review, we disclose any referral relationship. Our reviews cluster includes a mix of competitors and tools we genuinely use.
  • No keyword-stuffed filler. Articles are written to answer a buyer's question, not to rank for a string of variations. If a topic does not serve our readers, we do not publish it.
  • No recycled statistics presented as new. When we cite research, we cite the original publication, not the third outlet that cited it.

6. Corrections policy

We make mistakes. When we do, we fix them openly:

  • Factual errors are corrected as soon as we confirm them. The correction is dated and a brief note at the bottom of the article explains what changed.
  • Outdated data is replaced with the current source. The “last updated” date is bumped.
  • Reader-reported issues — if you spot an error or an unclear claim, email us. We investigate every report.

To report an error: nick+website@eaglerockai.com. Include the article URL and the specific claim.
